Eastbourne developed from a holiday and recreation location for Wellingtonians in the early 1900s to today's pleasant seaside Village and recreation location. A bus service and the East by West Ferry that runs between Wellington and Days Bay provide public transport.
Eastbourne has a splendid natural setting. Bounded by Wellington Harbour with a narrow coastal fringe backed by a green belt. It is a diverse landscape of bush, sea, hills and dunes ( East Harbour Regional Park). There are bush tracks including Butterfly Creek. It is a gateway to the Pencarrow Lighthouse which offers both spectacular views and tranquil surroundings.
Eastbourne village and the Days Bay areas are only a few minutes drive from the guesthouse. Here you are well served with a variety of cafes, restaurants and diverse retail.
Matiu/Somes Island is just 15 minutes by ferry from Days Bay and is a great place to spend the day. The island is a tranquil retreat for wildlife and visitors alike. It has a gentle track circumnavigating the 24.8 hectare island. The island supports a range of New Zealand's unique and some threatened native wildlife such as the red-crowned parakeet, North Island robin, variable oystercatcher, as well as the world's smallest penguin, the little blue penguin. You will also find giant weta; skinks, geckos and tuatara.
